The success of your sales funnel is entirely dependent on how long it is. It may seem obvious, but there’s actually a lot of science that went into figuring out what length is best. Sales professionals have been monitoring conversion rates for years and found that after 3-5 touches (or interactions), people will buy from you on their own without much intervention from you. The formula for ideal lead time goes something like: T(number of touches) = L(number of leads) x C(conversion rate). So in other words, if you have 100 leads and your conversion rate is 5%, then it will take about 4 steps (interactions) to convert them into paying customers. While there’s no correct number of emails for your sales funnel, there is an optimal one. A well-designed marketing strategy will consist of at least three touchpoints (emails, phone calls, webinars) before any sort of conversion or sale is made. If you don’t have enough content for three emails and you only send one email in your sales funnel, that probably won’t work very well. But if you have more than three content pieces in your email chain and it isn’t working, perhaps something needs to be taken out instead of added in. Make something for people in exchange for their email address. This can be as simple as an ebook with your top ten tips, or it could be something more complex, like a webinar recording where you teach people how to tie knots. Either way, make sure that once they opt-in, you follow through and deliver on what you promised. This creates trust and encourages people to continue engaging with your brand.
